Conditional discharge for man who intruded on woman’s privacy

A man who took pictures of female shoppers in a supermarket has been given an 18-month conditional charge.

Ryan Reid, 30, admitted the offence, which occurred at The MarketPlace on Church Street, when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court in February.

The court heard that the woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, contacted the Corporation of Hamilton after seeing Reid, from Pembroke, point his phone in her direction, as well as towards other women at the store, last June 9.

During a meeting with the woman and city staff, Reid admitted the offence and claimed to have a “problem with pornography”.

The court heard that Reid lost his job at the corporation over the incident.

Yesterday he appeared for sentencing when Magistrate Maria Sofianos warned Reid, who apologised for the incident, not to commit another offence for 18 months or incur a harsher sentence.
