Attorney-General meets legal officials in Trinidad & Tobago
The Attorney-General met with a series of top legal officials during a visit to Trinidad & Tobago last week.
Kim Wilkerson, who is also the Minister of Justice, was in Port of Spain to attend the 62nd Plenary and Working Group Meetings of the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force, held from May 25 to 29.
Ms Wilkerson told the Senate today that the meetings brought together regional partners to advance co-operation on anti-money laundering, counter-terrorist financing, financial crime, mutual evaluation standards and the emerging threats affecting the CFATF member jurisdictions.
She said: “Bermuda’s participation reflects our continued commitment to maintaining a strong, credible and effective anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorist financing framework.
“The international standards continue to evolve, and Bermuda must remain alert, prepared and responsive.”
She said the meetings were an important reminder that CFATF member jurisdictions share common responsibilities in protecting the integrity of the region’s financial systems.
“In a region as closely connected as the Caribbean, if standards fall in one jurisdiction, the impact can be felt more widely,” she added.
“That is why continued co-operation, pair engagement and consistent adherence to international expectations are so important,” she said.
Bermuda is preparing to clearly articulate its unique risk and context story and the steps taken to maintain the integrity of its financial system, the Attorney-General said.
A government statement said earlier that as part of the her visit to Trinidad & Tobago for the working group meetings of the CFATF last week, Ms Wilkerson made a courtesy call at the Caribbean Court of Justice, where she met Winston Anderson, president of the Caribbean Court of Justice, and attended a judgment delivery.
A spokesman said Ms Wilkerson was accompanied on the trip by David Roberts, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Justice, and Shakira Dill-Francois, the Solicitor-General.
Ms Wilkerson and Mr Roberts also met John Jeremie, the Attorney-General of Trinidad & Tobago, and Devesh Maharaj, the country’s Minister of Justice.
“It was a privilege to visit the Caribbean Court of Justice and to meet with the Honourable Mr Justice Winston Anderson,” Ms Wilkerson said.
“The court plays an important role in the region’s legal architecture and attending an in-person judgment delivery was a meaningful opportunity to see that work first-hand.”
