St George’s teen banned after police chase

A teenager who led police on a chase in Pembroke was banned from the roads for 18 months yesterday.

Jyus Dill, 19, from St George’s, pleaded guilty to charges of driving dangerously on Front Street and failing to stop for police in the early morning of June 30.

Magistrates’ Court heard that at about 3.30am that day, police were on mobile patrol in Hamilton when they noticed a motorcycle, ridden by Dill, stopped at the junction of Court Street and Church Street.

As the officers looked on, they noticed the pillion passenger on the motorcycle “fidgeting” and that he had appeared to drop an item on the ground.

The bike turned on to Court Street and the police car followed, activating its lights and signalling for the vehicle to stop. The bike stopped at the junction with Front Street and the police car pulled in front of it.

However, as an officer began to get out of the police car, the rider of the motorcycle slipped between the car and the sidewalk, turned on to Front Street and sped away.

The officers pursued the bike, which illegally swerved on to Spurling Hill and then Cavendish Road, ignoring a red light, before the bike was eventually stopped near the junction with Hibiscus Lane.

Police searched Dill, the pillion passenger and the motorcycle but found nothing liable for seizure.

After Dill pleaded guilty, magistrate Craig Attridge fined him $200 for failing to stop for police and $1,000 for driving dangerously. He banning him from driving all vehicles for 18 months.
