A magistrate banned three men from the road yesterday after each admitted driving while impaired by alcohol in separate incidents.

Eric Gitau, 28, from Warwick, pleaded to driving on Middle Road in Southampton while impaired by alcohol on the afternoon of June 14.

The court heard that at about 3.30pm, officers were outside an event at Snorkel Park in Dockyard when they received reports of a suspected impaired rider swerving while travelling down Middle Road in Southampton.

As the officers travelled to the area, they received further reports that the rider had crashed into a wall.

They found a damaged motorcycle on the ground and Gitau seated on a nearby wall.

The officers noticed that Gitau smelt of alcohol, his eyes were glazed and he wore a wrist band on for the same Snorkel Park event that officers had earlier attended.

Gitau admitted having “a few drinks” and was arrested.

Magistrate Maria Sofianos told the court that impaired driving was a very serious offence, fined Gitau $1,500 and banned him from driving all vehicles for 18 months.

During the same court session, Kentaro Bean, 21, from Devonshire, pleaded guilty to driving on December 28 last year while impaired by alcohol.

The court heard that at about 6pm that day, officers received reports of a crash on North Shore Road in Smith’s. Information suggested that a motorcycle rider had lost control of his vehicle and slid out while attempting to overtake other vehicles.

Officers arrived at the scene and found Bean, who readily admitted being drunk.

He was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment, where blood samples were taken, confirming that he was over the legal blood-alcohol level.

Ms Sofianos remarked: “We are getting numerous of these offences in plea court every day. It’s serious. You could have killed yourself. You could have killed someone else.”

She fined Bean $1,500 and banned him from driving all vehicles for 18 months.

Zachary Huntley, 44, a visitor from the United States, also pleaded guilty to a charge of driving while impaired by alcohol in an incident on Wednesday.

The court heard that at about 11.55pm, officers were conducting stops on East Broadway when they noticed a rental car travelling at slow speed and swerving between the lanes.

An officer signalled to Huntley to stop the vehicle but he continued towards the roundabout.

Police stopped the driver on Berry Hill Road and noticed that he smelt of alcohol, his eyes were red and he was swaying from side to side in the driver’s seat.

He denied drinking to the officers but was arrested and later pleaded guilty in court. He said: “I understand the severity of this and apologise.”

Ms Sofianos fined Huntley $1,500 and banned him from driving in Bermuda for 18 months.
