Four men who admitted operating vehicles while impaired by alcohol in or near Hamilton were disqualified from driving all vehicles yesterday.

Pedro Sousa, 48, Arbey Gloster, 38, Sabstone Mugala, 33, and Ujwal Gurung, 35, pleaded guilty to impaired driving when they appeared in Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that Sousa injured his face and knee after losing control of his motorcycle on Flora Duffy Hill on July 11.

He initially denied being in a crash when he first spoke to officers near the Crow Lane bus stop, but confessed when he saw them again at the junction of Point Finger Road and Berry Hill Road.

Magistrate Maria Sofianos noted that Sousa had two similar previous convictions, fined him $2,500 and banned him from the roads for three years.

Ms Sofianos warned Sousa that he could be jailed if he drives again while impaired, or drives at all within the three years.

The court also heard that police stopped Gloster, from St George’s, after he almost collided with cycles at a red light on Par-la-Ville Road, also on July 11.

Officers smelt alcohol on Gloster’s breath and took him to Hamilton Police Station.

Police stopped Mugala, from Pembroke, after he almost collided with a car near Church Street on July 10, the court was told.

The court finally heard that officers saw Gurung riding up Spurling Hill on July 7 and stopped him along Reid Street.

Ms Sofianos fined Gloster, Mugala and Gurung $1,500 each for the offences and disqualified them from driving for 18 months.
