A man who crashed into roadside foliage in Warwick has been ordered to participate in a drink-driver’s court treatment programme.

Giovanni Saltus, 41, admitted drink-driving when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The court heard that police saw smoke coming from a car that had struck a Brazilian pepper plant on South Road on July 26, and noticed Saltus in the area.

It was believed that Saltus, from Smith’s, crashed into the bush when driving west.

Officers smelt alcohol on Saltus’s breath and took him to Hamilton Police Station, where a breath test revealed between 226 and 229 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit for driving in Bermuda is 80mg/100ml.

Saltus has an earlier conviction for impaired driving, and was previously sentenced to a conditional discharge and community service for conspiring to defeat justice in relation to a crash that injured Royal Bermuda Regiment soldiers Ndavyah Williams and Kirk Wilks Jr on June 29, 2020.

Magistrate Maria Sofianos ordered Saltus to participate in DUI Court starting on Tuesday, released him on $1,200 bail and disqualified him from driving all vehicles until further notice.
