A magistrate implored a speeding motorcyclist to avoid becoming another fatal statistic on the roads.

Dean Lottimore Jr pleaded guilty at Magistrates’ Court to driving his bike in a manner dangerous to the public during a police chase.

The 21-year-old, from Pembroke, also admitted failing to stop for officers when they signalled for him to do so. Both offences occurred on May 9 last year.

While fining Lottimore $1,800 and banning him from driving for 18 months, Maria Sofianos, the magistrate, urged the rider to slow down and drive carefully — once he returns to the road.

She said: “There have been 13 or 14 fatalities this year and you don’t want to be added to that number. You won’t be because I am disqualifying you for 18 months.

“Don’t operate a car or motorbike meantime or you will come back before this court and you will go to prison. This is to be your final warning.

“What you did was foolish and very serious. You could have killed somebody or yourself. You are only 21 and you don’t want your family, your mother, to get a call to say you are in hospital.”

Lottimore said: “I am very sorry for the trouble, but since then I have not been in trouble.”

The chase was sparked at about 9.40pm as police officers were preparing to conduct stop checks on Dutton Avenue, Pembroke, when they spotted a black scooter travelling towards them.

They signalled to stop, but the rider turned and sped away.

Police activated their lights and siren, and began pursuing the motorcycle as Lottimore sped on to North Street before entering Court Street through the opposing lane.

He continued on to Ewing Street then Princess Street, where he disregarded a stop sign at the junction of Angle Street. Officers also saw him drive between two opposing cars.

Lottimore turned on to Elliott Street, failing to stop at another stop sign at the junction with Brunswick Street.

The high-speed chase continued on Brunswick Street and west on Beacon Street, where officers saw a car pull over in response to sirens.

Lottimore tried to overtake the car on the same side, but the vehicles collided.

The impact disabled the bike, which Lottimore discarded, fleeing on foot.

He was apprehended by officers near Laffan Street on Elliott Street. The court learnt he has previous convictions and seven traffic demerits.
