A drink-driver confessed to police that he had polished off a bottle of brandy on the night he was stopped.

Julius Tuzon, 25, was caught by officers as he drove a car very slowly out of Hamilton on Crow Lane.

Police on traffic duty noticed his unusual driving at about 12.50am on September 14 at the junction with Flora Duffy Hill, Paget.

They spotted damage to the bumper and wheel and directed him to pull over.

Tuzon, from Paget, instead stopped in the road and in traffic.

Officers ordered him to pull into the nearby bus layby and observed that he appeared unsteady. Tuzon’s speech was slurred, his eyes glazed and detected what they believed to be “intoxicating liquor coming from his breath”.

Prosecutor Jonathan Jervis told the court: “They asked him what he’d had to drink that night and he replied: ‘One bottle of brandy’.”

Tuzon was arrested on suspicion of driving while impaired by alcohol. He consented to provide samples of breath.

As well as being charged with impaired driving, Tuzon accused of driving a vehicle after consuming so much alcohol that the proportion of it in his breath exceeded the prescribed limit.

He pleaded guilty to both offences today in Magistrates’ Court.

Maxanne Anderson, the senior magistrate, asked if alcohol was affecting his life. Tuzon said it was not.

She fined him $1,500 with a default of 90 days in prison and disqualified him from driving all vehicles for 18 months.
