Fine, ban and suspended sentence for drink-driver

A driving disqualification, suspended prison sentence and heavy fine was the punishment for a Warwick man who admitted riding a motorbike while impaired by alcohol.

Jamel Harvey pleaded guilty to committing the offence on Harbour Road, Warwick, on Sunday evening.

The court heard how the 38-year-old was attempting to overtake traffic when he collided head-on with a car.

Police officers attending the scene of the collision observed the defendant was unsteady on his feet, had slurred speech and that his eyes were red and glazed.

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson imposed a $1,500 fine, 18-month disqualification from all vehicles and three months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years.

She said: “In my opinion, you are getting off light.”
