Plenty to play for as trial series begins

Oronde Bascome waits until the last moment before cutting a Kyle Hodsoll delivery past Blue Team wicketkeeper Chris Foggo during the first national team trial match at the National Sports Centre last night.

There is a week left until David Moore has to submit his Bermuda squad for the ICC Americas tournament next month, and on the evidence of last night there is still plenty for the Island's cricketers to fight for.In the first of four national team trial matches, Stephen Outerbridge's Blue Team drew first blood, but while some players advanced their case for inclusions, others are slipping further down the pecking order with every day that passes.Fiqre Crockwell certainly did his chances no harm with a solid unbeaten 39 that ultimately helped his side win with two balls to spare, and for the Red Team, Kamau Leverock's 38 was further evidence of his growing abilities.Among the rest, Lionel Cann hit a typically brisk 40 at the top of the Blue order to get the innings off to a fast start, while Dennico Hollis (18) is quietly moving into contention with every innings he plays. If there is reason to be hopeful with the batting, then the wicketkeeping and the bowling are two areas that are still far from decided.Jason Anderson appears more comfortable behind the stumps than Chris Foggo, and yet the contrast in batting styles could hardly be more different.Foggo's bustling 16 for the Blue Team, brought to an end when he was trapped lbw by Joshua Gilbert, was the polar opposite of Anderson's rather pedestrian 20 from 30 balls.Anderson came to the crease with his Red Team, who won the toss and opted to bat, 25 for one following the dismissal of Dion Stovell (17). Anderson and Oronde Bascome (26) then set about trying to build a decent total. The pair put on 43 for the second wicket, but it took them nine overs to do so, and they both then fell in one Kevon Fubler over to leave Red on 69 for three.Leverock's arrival saw the run rate increase considerably, and having scored 69 in the first 13 overs, the Red batsmen added another 66 in the final seven. Fubler had the best bowling figures for Blue, taking two for 16 from his four overs, while Kevin Tucker also picked up two wickets.Chasing 136 to win, Blue initially looked like they might make short work of the task, as Cann's 40 from just 27 balls got them to 50 in little more than seven overs.Cann may well have had a half century, but he was out to a ridiculous piece of fielding from substitute fielder David Lovell, who misjudged the flight of a Cann hook and had to leap to his left at the last minute to take a one-handed catch on the mid-wicket boundary. That left Blue 54 for two, following Chris Douglas' earlier dismissal, and the quick departure of Stephen Outerbridge for a duck left them wobbling slightly at 56 for three. However, Crockwell then came to the crease and anchored one end as Foggo, and then Hollis helped him get their side nearly across the line.Still, Blue needed seven to win from Justin Pitcher's last over, a task that was made slightly harder when Malachi Jones was run out from the first ball.Pitcher though struggled with his line and length last night, and it needed just three lusty blows from George O'Brien to settle the matter. The two teams will play again tonight, and with the squad due to be submitted next Friday, time is running out for players to force their way into the line-up.
