Cuts halt St. David's unbeaten run

George O'Brien finished unbeaten on 47 and took two wickets for Willow Cuts against St. David's at Lords on Saturday.

Willow Cuts 265 for nine, beat St David's 264 for eight, by one wicket. (Points: Cuts 12, St David's 2)Willow Cuts brought St David's seemingly unstoppable march through the Premier Division to a grinding halt on Saturday with a thrilling one-wicket win at Lords.Needing eight to win off the last six balls, Cuts bowler George O'Brien took a single, scrambled through for a leg bye when last man Kevin Fubler managed to get the ball away down the leg side and then launched OJ Pitcher for a straight six back towards the pavilion to spark wild scenes of celebration amongst the Cuts players. It was fitting that O'Brien, who was unbeaten on 47 and took two wickets, had the final say as he had given his team the perfect start when he trapped St David's opener Landro Minors lbw with the first ball of the day.In between Cuts had largely the better of the match, although that had as much to do with their impressive performance as it did with a St David's side who were below par.The league leaders bowled poorly, fielded badly, self-destructed at important times and were only able to post a reasonable total thanks to a well-crafted 76 from Sammy Robinson.Changing the batting order, with regular openers Delyone Borden and Ajun Lamb dropping down the order, did little to help their cause, and after Minors had gone his fellow opener Shea Pitcher had a hard time getting bat on ball. After being dropped in the covers by Deunte Darrell in the third over, Pitcher finally got off the mark two overs later when he edged O'Brien for four through gully just past the out-stretched hand of Sheroy Fubler.Fortunately for the league leaders, Fiqre Crockwell (20) was scoring runs at the other end, but when he edged Malachi Jones' first ball to Dexter Basden in the slips, St David's were 29 for two. Shea Pitcher was put out of his misery soon after, and at 33 for three St David's were struggling.A 43-run partnership between Borden (19) and OJ Pitcher (30) got their side going again, but Borden gifted his wicket to Kevin Fubler and when it seemed like OJ Pitcher and Lionel Cann (40) might turn things around, Cann was run out.OJ Pitcher was entirely to blame for the mix-up that led to the dismissal. He called for a run and went without seeing if Cann was interested, and that brought an end to an innings that had the makings of being one of Cann's best. The veteran batsman had been untroubled by a Cuts attack that lacked a little bit of bite outside of the bowling of Jones and O'Brien, but his departure left St David's 126 for five.In the end the home side were saved by Robinson and Loren Marshall (30) who got them past 200, and then by Robinson and Lamb (11 not out), who dragged their side to a respectable 264 for eight.Cuts didn't do themselves any favours though by failing to kill St David's off far earlier, at 162 for seven Jones and O'Brien should have returned to mop up the tail. Instead, Jones opted for spin, and they allowed St David's to get enough runs to win the game.St David's though made a lot of mistakes on Saturday and their fielding performance was as error-strewn as their batting. OJ Pitcher opened the bowling and got hammered, Justin Pitcher didn't make an appearance until late in the innings, wicketkeeper Lamb was such a disaster behind the stumps that he was replaced by Crockwell, and St David's conceded a whopping 34 extras. In that climate it would have taken a pretty special effort from the home team to win and they ultimately didn't have it in them. Cuts meanwhile took full advantage and punished St David's for the mistakes they made.Deunte Darrell (58) and Chris Douglas (25) put on 61 for the second wicket, after the early loss of Sheroy Fubler. But both gave up their wickets with careless shots and at 86 for three, Cuts were in a little bit of trouble. The turning point came soon after when OJ Pitcher dropped Jones at mid-wicket. Jones had scored just two at the time, and Cuts had yet to reach three figures. Jones went on to score 40, and when he left Bergon Spencer (28) and O'Brien battered their way towards victory.Justin Pitcher's introduction did give St David's a glimmer of hope, he took three wickets for 38 runs from his 10 overs, but crucially, had bowled out before the final four overs. He did get rid of Spencer though, and at 221 for eight, Cuts still needed 43 from 42 balls. However, O'Brien was not to be denied, and cut, pulled, and drove his side towards their target. In the end it came down to a battle between O'Brien and OJ Pitcher, and O'Brien won, with three balls to spare.
