Cleveland County president Carlton Smith has warned his team’s opponents not to take the Premier Division newcomers lightly during the upcoming cricket season. The Harris Bay club will be among the six-teams that will compete in Bermuda Cricket Board’s (BCB) new-look 50 Over Premier Division. And Smith, who has not ruled out making cameo appearances this summer, is confident Cleveland can hold their own in the top flight.“I know a lot of teams are going to be looking at us as whipping boys,” he said. “But on any given day anything can happen and if we can play to our potential then I’m certain we can surprise a few teams.“We have been in the Premier Division for seven of the past ten years so the guys know what it’s all about and so it is going to be no surprise to them. There is plenty of talent in our team and the guys will have to step up their game.”Cleveland lost the valued services of star batsman Glenn Blakeney who transferred to St George’s just prior to the transfer deadline despite the player vowing to stay on.Smith admits Blakeney’s departure is a massive blow for a club seeking to make its presence felt in the top flight.“Glenn is definitely a big loss for us,” he said. “His contribution was the main factor in us getting promoted last season.“I wish he would’ve stayed to help us stay up in the Premier Division. But for some reason he decided at the last minute that he doesn’t want to play Premier cricket.“It’s definitely a big loss, but I’m confident that we can get on without him.”Three new additions that could go some way towards compensating for the loss of Blakeney are the trio of Jason Anderson, Treadwell Gibbons Jr and Tamauri Tucker.Tucker is back following an unsuccessful stint at St David’s, Anderson transferred from relegated PHC while Gibbons has severed ties with Western Stars.Anderson and Gibbons will be a great asset in the batting with the former also useful with the gloves behind the stumps.“With the loss of Glenn these are new additions that add to the batting with Steven Douglas Jr, Kion Butterfield and a few of our youngsters that are looking to make a name for themselves this year,” Smith said.“Jason has matured a lot and I think he brings a lot of experience to the team while Treadwell, who was a late surprise, also strengthens our batting order.”Tucker is expected to shoulder much of the spin bowling duties along with the likes of Levarr Talbot.Another key player Cleveland could have at their disposal is seamer Damali Bell. Bell had originally been ruled out for the summer due to school commitments overseas.“Damali was supposed to be away in school but he might be back,” Smith said. “Damali is a quality bowler and his availability will also be an asset to the team.”
