Belco Cup hopefuls Devonshire could enter this weekend’s competition without the services of influential player/coach Ricky Brangman.According to reliable sources the veteran cricketer is set to resign as coach of the Premier club for personal reasons. It is understood Brangman is due to meet with his superiors at Devonshire today when it is expected he will officially step down from the top post.During his coaching tenure at the Den, Brangman has guided Devonshire to Central Counties, First Division 50-Over and Two-Day League glory. He had considered resigning as Devonshire’s coach at the end of last season but eventually had a change of heart after being asked to stay on.Brangman declined to comment when reached yesterday.Devonshire are fresh off a bruising 318-run loss to Southampton Rangers, a team previously captained by Brangman, at Southampton Oval on the weekend.Rangers piled up a mammoth 400 for five in their allotted 50 overs and then rolled a ten-men Devonshire over for a paltry 82 in just 21.5 overs.Devonshire are due to face Bailey’s Bay in Saturday’s Belco Cup semi-final at Somerset Cricket Club. The eventual winner of the match will play either Willow Cuts or St David’s in Sunday’s final at Lords. This year marks Devonshire’s first appearance in the competition since Belco came onboard as title sponsors in 2003.Devonshire won the inaugural competition in 1987 when it was then referred to as the Premier Cup, beating Bailey’s Bay by 73 runs at Wellington Oval. They also appeared in the final when the competition was renamed the Camel Cup in 1989, losing to St George’s on run rate at Lords.
