Mukuddem paid compliment by Bangladesh bat

Saleem Mukuddem in action for Bermuda against Bangladesh at the 2007 World Cup.

Bangladesh opening batsman Tamim Iqbal learned a cruel but fundamental lesson playing against Bermuda at the 2007 World Cup.The left-handed batsman paid the price for underestimating former Bermuda all-rounder Saleem Mukuddem in a Group B match at Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain Trinidad.Just days after stroking a match-winning half-century (51) in Bangladesh’s stunning five-wicket win over India at the same venue, Iqbal tried to impose his will on right-arm seamer Mukuddem.Ultimately, it proved to be a big mistake as it was the South African born medium pacer who came out on top in the end.In an article on ESPN cricinfo, Iqbal admitted he took Mukuddem, who claimed 23 ODI wickets in 20 matches playing for Bermuda, for granted. He said it was the first time he had ever taken any bowler for granted in a match.“After my match-winning half-century against India, I was confident. Perhaps, a bit over confident as I would find out against Bermuda in another group match,” Iqbal said. “I thought I had faced better bowlers, so I blindly charged Saleem Mukuddem, a medium-fast bowler.“I thought I would put him in his place. I stepped out and hit as hard as I could, but the top edge flew over point and third man (Kevin Hurdle) charged in and took a brilliant catch. It taught me that you can never take anyone for granted in international cricket.”Mukuddem went on to claim three for 19 off five overs that included a maiden. He finished as Bermuda’s leading wicket taker at the 2007 World Cup with five wickets at an average of 13.60.The South African won numerous domestic honours with Western Stars during his stay on the Island as a guest worker before returning to his homeland. In 2003, Mukuddem broke Charlie Marshall’s record (100 not out) for the highest individual score by a colt during his Cup Match debut for Somerset with an unbeaten 106 at Wellington Oval.He then followed up that superb knock with another unbeaten Cup Match century (160) the next year at Somerset to join an exclusive group of company to have scored two or more centuries in the annual classic.Mukuddem currently tops the Cup Match batting averages at 96.00 having amassed 384 runs during six visits to the crease.
