Western Stars, 38 for one, beat Devonshire Rec, 37 all out, by nine wicketsWestern Stars thrashed Devonshire Rec by nine wickets to snatch the Central Counties Cup from the holders at St John’s Field on Saturday. The challengers dispatched the title holders for one of the lowest totals in Central Counties history, courtesy of wicket-takers Jason Lowe, Seth Campbell and Brian Hall in just under 19 overs.“It was a good result for us, we have been doing well in both training and in matches and today we put it into our game today,” said Stars batsman Tre Manders.“Our main objective is to win everything possible this year. We have been playing well for a few years now. Last year we just missed out on promotion and this year is about achieving our goals.”In what was to a mismatch of epic proportions, it was the First Division side who won the toss and sent their Premier Division rivals to bat.Campbell made the first breakthrough, bowling opener Dennis Williams without scoring, which turned out to be one of three wickets he would grab.Fellow opener Jeremy Fray (1) managed to get on the board but was soon caught by Manders off the bowling of Hall.Kevin Abraham joined Worrell Bean Williams in the duck club for the champions, while Cup Match player Derrick Brangman, who held the key for the champions in their quest to retain their title, was out for four when he was bowled by Lowe.Only youngster Shaquille Trott (17) managed to get into double figures, with veterans Ryan Swan (1) and Wilbur Burt (1) unable to stop the inevitable with the side eventually being bowled out for a meagre 37 runs. The second highest scorer was extras with 11.Hall was the chief destroyer of the champions, claiming four wickets, while Campbell helped himself to three and Bermuda basketball international Lowe grabbed two.In reply, Manders steered his side to victory, ending with 10 not out along with Nyone Steede who was unbeaten on four.Manders’ opening partner Dano Outerbridge (8) was the only wicket lost, bowled by Burt.Next up for the newly crowned champions in the Counties is Young Men’s Social Club in the final round at St John’s Field.“Our team is young and this is a plus in terms of us being together for a few years going forward and hopefully we are together for years to come,” added Manders.“We are all friends but more importantly we work well together in order to get the job done.“We are the cup holders now and the main objective is done because we are the champions and the other teams have to come and get it from us instead of us trying to push the game.“Social Club are good team but our main focus will be more about our game rather then theirs and keeping our cup.”
