BCB: Relieving Manders of U19 coaching duties was right call

Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) deemed it inappropriate for Andre Manders to serve as head coach of Bermuda’s Under-19 national squad during next month’s ICC America’s Under-18 Match Play Tournament in Florida. The former Somerset Cup Match skipper was relieved of his duties as further punishment for his actions during a May 6 First Division match between Western Stars and Flatts that was abandoned after tempers flared.Manders was reprimanded for displaying conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game while serving as a stand-in umpire. He is alleged to have shoved Flatts bowler Kevin Hurdle after the latter tried to calm a heated verbal exchange between Manders’ son Tre and Flatts’ Rahji Edness.Stand-in umpire Wayne Campbell eventually pulled stumps after the situation threatened to escalate.Commenting on the decision to temporarily strip Manders of his Under-19 coaching duties, BCB CEO Neil Speight said: “The BCB has decided that, in the light of Andre Manders’ actions during the Western Stars v Flatts abandoned game on May 6, it is not appropriate for him to serve as head coach for the Under-18 on the upcoming ICC tournament on July 2 to 8.”Speight noted that “full consideration” was given to the mitigating factor of Manders’ “exemplary record” over 25 years in cricket and his many valued years of service to the National Academy programmes.”BCB president Lloyd Fray said he looks forward to Manders’ continued involvement in the board’s youth development program.“The BCB is very appreciative of the valuable hours and commitment that Andre contributes to our Under-19 programme,” he said. “Andre has accepted the decision and has confirmed to me that he is keen to continue in the capacity as head coach of the Under-19 Academy squad.“I look forward to his involvement and direction in our youth development program as we continue to prepare our Under-19 squad for the ICC Under-19 World Cup Qualifier next year.”Manders declined to comment.Tempers flared during last month’s controversial First Division match between Stars and Flatts at St John’s Field after Manders’ son Tre stood his ground after he was adjudged to have been run out by stand-in umpire Campbell. It is then alleged that heated words were exchanged between the batsman and Edness which resulted with the former threatening to strike the latter with the bat.It is understood that Hurdle eventually stepped in to separate the two men but is alleged to have been shoved by Manders’ father Andre who is Stars’ player/coach.In retaliation Hurdle is alleged to have kicked the senior Manders before Campbell abandoned the match.Manders’ son, who is among the 14 players chosen to represent Bermuda’s Under-19s in Florida, was also reprimanded for using obscene, offensive and insulting language or gestures during the same match.Flatts pair Kevin Hurdle and Rahji Edness were also punished for their involvement in the brawl that marred the opening weekend of the 2012 cricket season. Hurdle was banned for a year and two 50 over matches after being found guilty of physical assault of another player and showing serious dissent at an umpire’s decision. Edness was banned for two 50 over matches for using obscene, offensive and insulting language or gestures.Flatts lost their appeal against Hurdle’s ban but are considering taking their case to the Ministry of Sports Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) arbitration panel in the hope of having their player’s punishment reduced.BCB CEO Speight dismissed Flatts’ claims that Hurdle’s ban is excessive.“Any claims that the penalty assessed on Kevin is excessive have absolutely no foundation,” he said. “Kevin Hurdle pled guilty to both Code of Conduct breaches at his recent hearing.“The Disciplinary Committee levied the minimum penalty applicable available to them after considering the mitigating circumstances.”Flatts have accused Manders and his son of instigating the brawl and claim the disciplinary proceedings involving their players was biased.
