The Associates complete thrilling T20 win

Gary Knight was named man of the match for his battling knock of 31 that helped guide The Associates to a thrilling last-over victory against Premier Division champions Fine Leg Byes in the Evening Cricket League’s Twenty20 Knockout Cup final at Shelly Bay.Knight, who needed a runner during his innings, provided the impetus for victory but The Associates wobbled and still needed five to win at the start of a dramatic last over, one man short after Dave Horan had to leave early. To add to the drama, The Associates lost an eighth wicket — in effect a ninth — to the third ball but Simon Jones struck a boundary off the fourth and scrambled a single with number eleven Dick Witkowski off the fifth to secure a last-gasp victory.Earlier, The Associates restricted Fine Leg Byes — who lost only one league match, to runners-up West XI — to 121-6.Brett Henshilwood was the pick of The Associates’ attack, taking 3-25, after skipper Damion Henderson won the toss and chose to field.Chris Clarke was an automatic choice as man of the match in the Second Division final, hitting 52 at number three and taking 3-11 as PWC Byes beat league champions Renegades by 15 runs.Like The Associates, PWC Byes finished only third in the league but Clarke’s half-century helped them pile up 137-5 in their 20 overs after winning the toss and then held Renegades to 122-8.Consolation for Renegades is that they have won promotion back to the top flight next season, replacing High Flyaz, who have been relegated after losing every league match. Each division has eight teams.Veteran cricket announcer and former Tourism Minister Jim Woolridge presented the awards. The Associates’ skipper Henderson paid tribute to league organiser Stephen West and administrator Natalie Dyrli, saying: “The cricket is really enjoyable and continues to attract new players which reflects how well it is run.”
