Zuill’s plan for Twenty20 legends league

In his honour: "Soup" Zuill

Hoyt Zuill has come up with an idea to generate some extra interest in cricket during the upcoming season, a Twenty20 league for retired players over 45.

Zuill has spent the past couple of days working out the logistics for the league, to be called the Warrington “Soup” Zuill Masters T20 League, in honour of his late father, a cricket historian.

Zuill hopes to have six teams in the league and each named after local legends, including one named Soup’s Sportsmen. He also has the names of the other five teams but is awaiting approval from the players or their families.

“I just sat down yesterday and started working it out,” Zuill said. “It would be one match on the Friday night and two on the Saturday. I’m just waiting to get answers from the legends who I’m naming the teams after to get their permission.

“I picked those guys because they were awardees for my father’s star awards that I presented in memory of my dad. It won’t clash with the league so when there are league games or county matches we won’t schedule the games on the Saturday. There will also be no games on the Sunday.”

Zuill would need about fifteen players for each team and the players will be attached to the teams by a draw.

“I think it will be interesting, something we haven’t done before,” said Zuill. “They will have to be retired, otherwise it would be a disadvantage to the other players if they are still playing.

“I’m also working on coloured clothing. It would be two rounds [of games], playing each other twice and the top four will qualify for the semi-finals. I want to start on the Friday before the BCB [Bermuda Cricket Board] league starts.”
