Bailey’s Bay pair Derrick Brangman and captain Rodney Trott will appear before a disciplinary hearing tonight over the recently abandoned One 50 Overs Premier Division match with Western Stars at St John’s Field when Brangman refused to walk.

Brangman, who believed the full toss he was caught off should have been called a wide, stood his ground for several minutes before stand-in umpire Kent Gibbons decided to halt the match with Bay 59 for four wickets in reply to Stars’ 119.

Trott’s charge is likely for failing to control the conduct of his player.

The Bermuda Cricket Board confirmed tonight’s hearing but added “no further comment will be made until the hearing is concluded”.

The match on June 17, along with the top-fight game between St George’s and Somerset Cricket Club was not played that day because of an umpire shortage. No decision has been made by the BCB on either match, but both will have a bearing on the relegation battle as Stars lead rock-bottom Somerset by 15 points.

If Stars are awarded the points it would be a tremendous boost to their survival hopes. The St John’s Field side have had a disappointing season, which included being dethroned as Central Counties champions by Evening League team Tuff Dogs. Arnold Manders, the Stars coach, is anxiously awaiting the BCB’s decision on the points.

“That’s in the [BCB’s] hands right now,” Manders said. “Whatever the BCB decides we will have to deal with it, just like an umpire’s decision.

“We still have to play Somerset. We just have to chip away and get points, probably get another win before then.”

Stars’ other two matches are against St George’s on Sunday, and then St David’s at home on July 15.

“The problem we’re having is not putting a consistent 11 out there because we have so many players on shift work,” Manders said. “I don’t know what I’m getting. Andre [Manders] was injured on Sunday but hopefully he’ll be available this weekend.”

At the other end of the table, Southampton Rangers are in the driver’s seat in the title race. They hold an 11-point lead over two-times defending champions St David’s going into their weekend matches, which pit St David’s against Bay at Sea Breeze Oval while Rangers host Somerset at Southampton Oval.

First Division matches are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday with leaders Flatts playing third-placed Somerset Bridge.

Cleveland County, fourth, will aim to remain in contention with wins over Warwick Workmen’s Club and Devonshire Recreation Club, while Bridge meet Warwick on Sunday. Flatts have a bye on Sunday.

n Roger Dill has been chosen to umpire at the Global T20 League in Canada, which involves Bermuda all-rounder Kamau Leverock playing alongside West Indians Chris Gayle and Andre Russell for Vancouver Knights.

The tournament starts tonight with the Knights facing a Toronto Nationals team containing Darren Sammy, Steve Smith and Kieron Pollard.

The inaugural Global T20 League will feature international players from around the world. Each of the six competing teams will feature four Canadian players alongside the international players.

The tournament will run for three weeks with the final scheduled for July 15.
