Rawlins bags two wickets as Sussex draw

Delray Rawlins claimed two wickets during the fourth and final day of Sussex second XI's friendly against Derbyshire second XI.

The match ended in a draw after bad light halted play during the evening session at Blackstone Academy Ground yesterday.

The Sussex all-rounder returned figures of two for 79 from 20 overs after being brought into the attack as first change to finish with a match haul of three for 146.

Earlier, Sussex second XI declared their second innings at 177 for three, an overall lead of 284, before lunch, giving them two sessions to try and dismiss their opponents and secure victory.

Things looked promising for Rawlins and his team-mates after they made an early breakthrough.

However, the Derbyshire second XI received solid support from their remaining top order batsmen with A.R.I. Umeed scoring 101 from 119 balls — his second century of the match — to frustrate the visitors in the field.

Umeed, who struck an unbeaten 128 in his team's first innings, was the last wicket to fall in the 63rd over at 270 for six before bad light halted play.

Rawlins led his team's batting in the first innings. The former St George's Cup Match player gathered 78 from 110 balls in 112 minutes that included 11 fours and a six as Sussex second XI piled up 382 all out after being sent in to bat.

The left-hander led a middle-order fightback after his team slipped to 58 for three in the fifteenth over.

Rawlins was promoted to No 3 in his team's second innings, blasting two fours and a six in a blistering knock of 15 from seven balls as Sussex second XIs pushed for the early declaration.

The 21-year-old became the first Bermudian to play in a major cricket final in England after featuring for Sussex Sharks during the Vitality Blast Twenty20 Finals Day at Edgbaston last weekend.
