Rawlins and Sussex well beaten by Surrey

Delray Rawlins and his Sussex team-mates crashed to a six-wicket defeat to Surrey in the four-day Bob Willis Trophy match at the Kia Oval today.

Playing their final four-day match of the season, Sussex led by 27 runs on first innings after winning the toss and electing to bat.

They scored 415 all out with Rawlins, batting at No 4, hitting 65 off 88 balls in 130 minutes at the crease. The left-hander stroked six fours and two sixes.

Rawlins then claimed one wicket for 78 runs from 20 overs of left-arm spin as Surrey were dismissed for 388 in their first innings to trail by 27 runs.

However, Sussex failed to build on their slight lead as they were dismissed for just 128 in 38.2 overs in their second innings, with Rawlins out for nine.

England Test opener Rory Burns added 52 to his first innings century as Surrey reached their winning target of 157 with the loss of just four wickets.

Burns hit eight fours off 71 balls and was at the crease for 99 minutes before he was fourth out on 120.

James Coles, a 16-year-old debutant for Surrey and their youngest first-class player, picked up two wickets in the space of four balls in the second innings, that of Burns who was stumped and Jamie Smith who was bowled for 33.

The pair added 64 for the third wicket in 14 overs to pace the run chase.

The winning runs were scored by Ben Foakes who, after edging a delivery from Rawlins just short of slip, then hit the winning runs when he pulled Rawlins for six.

Rawlins, the first change, claimed one for 60 off 17.5 overs while Coles had figures of two for 32 from 11 overs.

Sussex will end their season with six Vitality Blast 20-over matches starting tomorrow against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl.
