White Hill Field (Warwick won toss): PHC beat Warwick by 119 runs

Davin Dill thumped an unbeaten century and Kevin Tucker and Dev Hanuman both achieved five-wicket hauls to help challengers PHC dethrone champions Warwick Workmen’s Club in the second round of the Western Counties at White Hill Field on Saturday.

Top-order bat Dill stroked 13 boundaries in a knock of 111 off 107 balls in 162 minutes, while Tucker claimed five for 16 and captain and man of the match Hanuman five for 45 to guide PHC to a convincing 119-run victory.

The challengers were in a spot of bother at 25 for two in the tenth over after losing the toss and being sent to bat before Dill, whose century arrived off 104 balls in 157 minutes, dominated several partnerships to spearhead an outstanding fightback.

He added 79 with captain Hanuman to begin the recovery, 96 with guest player Dalin Richardson in a fourth-wicket partnership that ultimately put the match beyond Warwick’s reach, and a further 46 with Jahmari Beach.

The No 3 bat eventually ran out of partners as a late collapse saw PHC lose five wickets for 39 runs in the space of four overs, including three without any addition to the score.

Opening bowler Jamar Stovel was the catalyst for the slide, as he claimed four wickets in his second spell.

Stovel was the pick of a wayward Warwick attack with four for 30 while fourth change and captain Dominic Sabir took two for 62.

Richardson, one of several guest players featuring in the match, was PHC’s second-highest scorer with an aggressive 57 from 31 balls that contained five sixes and three fours.

The all-rounder’s half-century arrived off just 25 balls in 41 minutes.

Hanuman and Beach chipped in with 29 apiece while Warwick conceded 41 wides among a costly total of 48 extras.

First and second change bowlers Hanuman and Tucker then wreaked havoc with the ball as Warwick found themselves in deep trouble at 59 for seven before their tail wagged to delay PHC’s celebrations.

Hanuman made the initial breakthrough after dismissing Warwick openers Stovel and Jaden Manders to trigger a massive collapse that saw six wickets tumble for just four runs in five overs, including three with no addition to the score for the second time in the match.

Tailenders Jahcobi Butterfield and Ajani Lee, the wicketkeeper, eventually offered some resistance to stop the rot.

The pair produced Warwick’s highest stand of 81 in 12 overs to see the holders past the century mark and keep their fading hopes alive.

Butterfield blasted 46 from 35 balls in 76 minutes, which included two sixes and four fours, before he was dismissed off the bowling of Tucker in the 32nd over.

Lee added a further 17 with Jodi Maronie before he was the last wicket to fall, stumped by counterpart Khiry Furbert off the bowling of Tucker, after stroking a six and a four in a knock of 31 from 53 balls in 77 minutes.

PHC will defend their title against Willow Cuts in the third round at White Hill Field on August 7 with the winners to meet Southampton Rangers in the final on August 21.
