Delray Rawlins

Bermudian Delray Rawlins will venture into new territory today when he turns out for Southern Brave against Trent Rockets in Nottingham in The Hundred, which started on Thursday after a one-year delay because of the Covid pandemic.

Eight men’s and eight women’s teams will be in action during the month-long tournamen,t which will end with the men’s and women’s finals at Lord’s on August 21. The group winners after the round-robin matches will play the winners of the elimination match between the second and third placed teams in the final.

The men’s and women’s teams are: Birmingham Phoenix, London Spirit, Manchester Originals, Northern Superchargers, Oval Invincibles, Southern Brave, Trent Rockets, and Welsh Fire.

Southern Brave, who are rated as one of the favourites, have a strong side with the likes of Jofra Archer, George Garton, Chris Jordan and Tymal Mills, as well as international players Devon Conway, of New Zealand, Quinton de Kock, of South Africa and Colin de Grandhomme, of New Zealand. Mahela Jayawardene, the former Sri Lanka captain, is the coach.

The tournament is capitalising on the popularity of Twenty20 cricket, although with slight adjustments. For example, a bowler can choose to bowl five or ten balls in a row.

Each bowler gets to bowl a maximum of 20 balls per match. The fielding side will change ends every ten balls. The powerplay will be the first 25 balls of each 100-ball innings.

Matches are expected to last about 2½ hours and will feature the women’s matches between the same teams as part of double-headers.

The Brave, who will play their home matches at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton, will play again on Tuesday when they meet Welsh Fire in Cardiff before taking on Birmingham Phoenix in their first home match next Friday.

Southern Brave: Jofra Archer, Danny Briggs, Devon Conway (New Zealand), Alex Davies, Liam Dawson, Quinton de Kock (South Africa), George Garton, Colin de Grandhomme (New Zealand), Chris Jordan, Jake Lintott, Tymal Mills, Craig Overton, Delray Rawlins, James Vince, Max Waller, Ross Whiteley.
