Western Stars capture nail-biting Central Counties final

Devonshire Recreation Club (Western Stars won toss): Western Stars beat Devonshire Rec by 19 runs

Western Stars were crowned Central Counties champions after beating holders Devonshire Rec in a tense finish on Saturday.

The visitors scored 218 all out in 44.2 overs after winning the toss and electing to bat.

They then dismissed their opponents for 199 in 39.3 overs to regain the showpiece.

Khiry Furbert, the Stars captain, led the challengers’ batting with 80 from 84 balls with five sixes and three fours.

Brian Hall was next high man, stroking 41 from 36 balls with two sixes and three fours.

Tre Manders (35) and Treadwell Gibbons Jr (23) were the remaining Stars batsmen in double figures.

Alafia Henry, the Devonshire Rec captain, led his team’s bowling with five for 32, while Dion Ball claimed two for 47.

Devonshire got their reply off to a shaky start as Seth Campbell made the early breakthrough with the new ball to reduce the home team to 34 for three in the tenth over.

A timely 54 -run fourth wicket stand between Drewonde Bascome and Chris Dailey got the run chase back on track.

However, Gibbons, Hall and Phillip Thomas ran through Devonshire’s middle and lower order with minimum fuss to complete seal the deal.

Drewonde Bascome topped the Devonshire batting with 85 from 83 balls, with 11 fours and three sixes.

Ball (25), Henry (18) and Onias Bascome (12) — who was held back at No 7 after suffering cramp and a leg injury in the field — were the remaining Devonshire batsmen in double figures.

Hall claimed three for 36 and Campbell three for 38 to lead the Stars attack.
