Sussex closed the first day on 82 for one in reply to Durham’s first innings score of 223 in the LV= Insurance County Championship at the 1st Central County Ground in Hove.

Durham were dismissed in 73.5 overs after winning the toss with Bermudian Delray Rawlins bowling one over late in the innings and giving up four runs.

Liam Trevaskis, batting at No 7, was the top bat for Durham with a career-best 88 from 11 fours during his 163-minute stay at the crease.

Trevaskis came in at 75 for five, in the middle of a slump by the visitors who went from 60 for two in the twentiethover to 75 for six in 24.5 overs. Opener Sean Dickson was the next highest Durham scorer with 34.

Aaron Beard and Tom Clark took three wickets apiece to peg back Durham. Beard, on his Sussex debut after signing for a month from Essex, claimed three for 51 in 14.5 overs while Clark had impressive figures of three for 21 from 17 overs. Mason Crane supported with two for 28 from eight overs.

Sussex reached 82 in 20 overs during the final 81 minutes of play, with captain Tom Haines hitting his third half-century of the season, a brisk 54 in 61 minutes with 10 fours after he and Ali Orr put on 68 for the first wicket in 15.3 overs.

Orr is not out on 21 from 45 balls while Mason Crane is not out on five going into day two when Sussex will be looking to erase the 141-run deficit and build a first innings lead as they seek their first win of the season.

Sussex are bottom of the Division Two tables with two losses and a draw in their first three matches while Durham are two places above them with a loss and two draws.
