Torleair Caines, the Warwick all-rounder, has been suspended for two games by his club for spitting at an opposing player in the Athene T20 Premier Division match of the day at PHC Field on Sunday.

The incident, which involved Southampton Rangers batter Dion Stovell, happened towards the end of the first over bowled by Caines as Rangers began their reply to Warwick’s total of 169.

Caines was asked to leave the field by the Warwick captain Cory Burgess and umpire Alex Knight, leaving Warwick to play the rest of the game with ten men as Rangers made a successful run chase, reaching their target with the loss of four wickets and seven balls remaining.

Lorenzo Tucker, the Warwick president, confirmed yesterday that disciplinary action had been taken against Caines.

“Obviously it was an unfortunate incident which marred a competitive game of cricket,” he told The Royal Gazette. “It’s not the type of behaviour we condone at Warwick.

“The disciplinary committee met last night and he was handed a two-game suspension. The Bermuda Cricket Board are meeting to maybe give further punishment, but we dealt with it internally ourselves.

“The captain and the umpire asked him to leave the field. Basically, he apologised to the team, saying he just lost his head in the heat of the moment.”

Board officials saw the incident themselves as they were sitting with invited guests, namely staff from sponsor Athene Life Re.

Cal Blankendal, executive director of the BCB, said the governing body will look into the incident to see if it warrants further disciplinary action.

“We will follow our normal disciplinary procedures and once that has taken place we will be able to inform the club and other stakeholders of the findings,” Blankendal said yesterday.

“That’s where we are at the moment. We have our policies and procedures that we have to follow before we can report anything. We will inform the player, club and external stakeholders on the outcome.

“We remind all club players and spectators to adhere to the fair play spirit of the game.“

Stovell also left the field immediately after the incident, to allow the situation to calm down, returning at the fall of the third wicket to guide his team to victory with a knock of 49 not out.

Malachi Jones, the Warwick opening batter, scored a century against his former team in a losing cause as Rangers picked up their first win in the competition.

Jones is the leading scorer in the Premier Division with 177 runs after two matches, after his knock of 65 in the win over Somerset in Warwick’s opening match.

Jaiden Manders, of Western Stars, is the leading wicket-taker, with six wickets after two matches against Cleveland and Somerset.

In the First Division, Shawn Riley, of Somerset Bridge, has the most runs (91) while George O’Brien, of St David’s, has the most wickets with five.
