St David’s make hard work of successful run chase against Bridge

Wellington Oval (Somerset Bridge won toss) St David’s beat Somerset Bridge by three wickets

St David’s bounced back from their Eastern Counties loss the previous day with a third straight victory in a low-scoring Athene T20 League First Division match.

After restricting Somerset Bridge to 76 for five in their 20 overs, St David’s made hard work of the run chase, getting down to their tail-enders before veteran George O’Brien scored the winning single off the first ball he faced.

Captain Justin Pitcher was caught behind by Jason Smith off Cadence Douglas for five the previous ball with the scores tied.

However, O’Brien made sure there would be no drama by pushing the ball on the off-side for a single.

Bridge certainly made things difficult for St David’s, taking the first two wickets in the second over of the innings from Noel Woods who had Ricky Foggo caught off his first delivery and then three balls later claimed the wicket of Ricardo Brangman to leave St David’s in early trouble at three for two.

A third wicket stand of 48 in nine overs between opener Iyuan Smith and Derrick Brangman put St David’s back on course, taking the score to 51.

But when the stand was broken with Smith caught and bowled by captain Shane Hollis for 18, another collapse saw St David’s lose two more wickets in the next over from Samir Tavares when Isaiah O’Brien was run out and Eugene Ball bowled, both failing to score.

Brangman then departed for a top score of 39 when he was bowled by Tavares to make it 67 for six.

He faced 35 balls and hit two fours and three sixes.

No other batsmen reached double figures as Woods claimed two for seven from three overs and Tavares two for 14 from four to lead the Bridge bowling.

Earlier Kieran Richardson, batting at No 3, scored 21 from 36 balls to lead the Bridge batting.

He and opener Woods put on 25 for the second wicket in their biggest stand after Shawn Riley was first out with only seven runs on the board.

It was slow scoring for Bridge who hit only five boundaries in their 20 overs, three fours and two sixes.

Spinner Derrick Brangman also led the bowling, taking three for 24 from his four overs.
