Southampton Oval (Willow Cuts won toss): Willow Cuts beat PHC by 147 runs

Willow Cuts thrashed nine-man PHC to get back to winning ways at the earliest opportunity in a lopsided Athene First Division T20 contest at Southampton Oval on Sunday.

Led by solid knocks from Chakote Basden, Joseph Basden and captain Ras Solomon Burrows, Cuts posted 201 for seven after electing to bat.

Seamer Sher-maur Gomes then claimed three wickets as PHC were dismissed for 54 in 13.1 overs.

“It was a great display from the team,” Burrows said.

“The pitch was all right to begin with, so I elected to bat first and we carried ourselves really well with the bat.

“A few guys fell short but the team total was marvellous.”

Cuts received solid contributions from their top order.

Burrows and Joseph Basden added 77 for the first wicket to lay a solid foundation.

Basden then added another 36 with Chakote Basden after two wickets fell for ten runs.

Chakote Basden topped scored with a ruthless 56 from 28 balls. He hammered six fours and two sixes, including one off PHC player-coach Cal Waldron to bring up his fifty off 20 balls.

Burrows and Joseph Basden chipped in with 41 each and were unfortunate to fall short of the fifty milestone.

PHC’s batters struggled to get on top of the bowling in reply and virtually gifted their wickets away with some poor shot selection and running between the stumps.

Sergio Raynor made the breakthrough when Dionte Dowling was held at mid-off in the first over of the innings.

Wickets continued to tumble at regular intervals thereafter, as Raynor and new-ball partner Gomes tightened the screws.

Gomes led the charge with three for 18, while Raynor took two for 15.

Fourteen-year-old Jayden Spencer also claimed a wicket on his senior debut with his very first ball, bowling David Adams swiping across the line.

Lower-order bat Christopher Clarke topped the PHC batting with 22 from 21 balls with two fours and as many sixes.

The result was the perfect response for Cuts having suffered their first loss of the T20 campaign against fellow title and promotion contenders St David’s at Lord’s 24 hours earlier.

“This game was very important after losing to St David’s yesterday,” Burrows said. “St David’s was the first slip-up, so we need to win every game.”
