Wellington Oval (Western Stars won toss): St George’s beat Western Stars by nine wickets

Allan Douglas Jr produced a dominant all round-display to guide hosts St George’s to an emphatic win over Western Stars in the Athene T20 Premier Divison on Sunday.

The experienced all -rounder claimed four for 11 with his off spin as Stars were restricted to 68 for six after electing to bat in a game reduced to 13 overs due to a damp pitch.

Douglas then led the chase, thumping a six and three boundaries in an unbeaten 29 from 20 balls as St George’s raced to their target in just 7.1 overs.

St George’s lost opener Macai Simmons (24) in the fourth over when he was caught at long-on off seamer Rohan Davis.

Douglas and captain Onias Bascome (6) then knocked off the remaining runs to see the hosts across the line without further damage.

After his good knock, Douglas was brought into the attack at the start of the ninth over and enjoyed early success after Dante Wellman was caught at long-on off just his third delivery.

The third-change bowler then shifted into high gear and picked up three wickets in this third over.

Jason Anderson was trapped lbw playing across the line of a straighter delivery, Rohan Davis was stumped after charging the bowler while Tre Manders was bowled by a ball pitched outside off stump that turned sharply back.

“I came on in the depths so obviously I knew they were going to go after it,” Douglas said. “I just wanted to restrict Tre because I know he likes to sweep spin bowling so I came around the wicket to eliminate that and ended up bowling him fortunately.

“Everybody else was simply just trying to hit out the last couple of overs.”

Captain Bascome was also effective with the ball, claiming two for seven with his medium seam.

Manders, 20, and Wellman, 14, were the only Stars batters in double figures.

Douglas and Simmons added a brisk 40 for the first wicket before the latter failed to connect cleanly and was held in the deep.

However, that was it as good as it got for the visitors as Douglas and Bascome steered St George’s to victory with minimum fuss.

“I have a little injury on my hand so I was really just trying to graft,” Douglas added. “But I was not feeling the hand so I said I might as well have a go, and it was not too bad.”

Davis took one for 17 while Wellman was Stars’ most economical bowler having gone for just eight runs in the two overs he sent down.
