Sea Breeze Oval (Rangers won toss): Bailey’s Bay beat Southampton Rangers by 66 runs.

Bailey’s Bay made it back-to-back victories at the start of the new 50 Overs Premier Division season when easily overcoming Southampton Rangers.

Having been put into bat, Bay recovered from a poor start, which left them at 63 for 4 after 12 overs, to eventually set a daunting total of 274 for 6.

Rodney Trott led the way, top scoring on 89 not out, with captain Terryn Fray also impresing with a knock of 87. Ryonde Swan was the pick of the bowling attack with figures of 2 for 56, while captain Dalin Richardson and Isaiah Taylor picked up the other wickets.

Despite a solid knock of 75 not out off 85 balls from Richardson, Rangers never threatened the target, with Jaloni Albuoy (47) the only other batsman to make a telling contribution as the visitors could manage only 208 for 9 from their allotted overs.

Trott also stood out with the ball, taking three wickets and giving up 30 runs in the process. Zakao Hart and Coolidge Durham took two wickets apiece, while Sharye Tavares claimed the remaining wicket.

“On a personal level, it wasn’t a bad day for myself,” said Trott. “I’ve been putting in a lot of work over the past few weeks and I guess today it paid off.

“Obviously you always aim to start off a new season with wins and, although we struggled in the field a little, we got our rewards.

“It was a good team performance with different guys chipping in. We are still missing a couple of players through injury and being away at school, so that just shows the strength in depth that we have.

“We are definitely looking to challenge this season, but we just need to keep it one going one game at a time and keep building that momentum.”

After getting off to a tentative start, Bay lost opener Durham (2) in the sixth over after he was run out by Keishon Wilson with just 23 runs on the board. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, with Azende Furbert (5), opener Tavares (34) and Stephen Outerbridge (0) all being dismissed in the space of another six overs, with just a further 40 runs on the board.

However, with Trott joining Fray, any lingering nerves were quickly settled as that pair put on a pivotal 140-run partnership from 172 balls before the former was caught off the bowling of Taylor after helping to take the Bay total to 203.

That brought Shakeal Outerbridge to the crease and his was the last wicket to fall after he went for a duck with seven runs added after 41.5 overs. Kyle Hodsoll (19 not out) joined Trott to see out the remaining overs, reaching 274.

Rangers’ reply got off to a disastrous start as opener Wilson (1) was dismissed off the bowling of Hart in just the second over.

The struggles continued as fellow opener Nacori Smith (11) – caught off the bowling of Tavares – followed in the ninth over, with Micah Wellman (11) also departing soon after with the score at 35-3 in the eleventh over.

Albuoy joined Donte Brangman (12) at the crease and helped steady the innings slightly before the latter was caught leg before by Trott at the end of the nineteenth over with 62 runs on the board.

Dakarrie Steede (1) became Trott’s second wicket just nine balls later with only a further two runs added the total, before Richardson finally gave Albuoy (47) some solid support. The pair reached the 130-mark before the latter was caught off the bowling of Durham in the 31st over.

Makai Jacobs (1) and Swan (0) put up little resistance, dismissed in successive balls, the latter bowled by Trott to complete his three-wicket haul, leaving the score at 148 for 8 in the 35th over.

Taylor (1) also failed to make a telling contribution, falling as the penultimate wicket at the start of the 42nd over, but a determined Richardson helped Rangers to see out the remaining overs, as he and Swayne Raynor (7 not out) put on a final stand of 38 runs.
