Composure key for Clay Smith as he masterminds another shot at rivals

Calling for composure: Clay Smith wants St George's players to show self-belief against Somerset (File photograph)

Clay Smith, the St George’s coach, is asking his players to show composure against what he describes as a well-organised Somerset team.

Smith believes the St George’s players are capable of delivering a victory but only if they put their minds to it.

“My players are good enough and I back them 100 percent,’’ Smith said.

“It’s all about if they show up in the right frame of mind, believe in themselves and play together as a unit. Somerset are a well-oiled machine, they've been together for quite some time and the nucleus of their team hasn't changed much over the last five or six years.

“There is no doubt we have the ability, but it’s just about being able to perform on the day. It’s a totally different atmosphere when you are in front of thousands of people, walking out and you hear the horns blaring, the people cheering, and the flags waving.

“Some people crack under pressure and some people rise to the occasion, so I am just hoping that my players have the confidence and back themselves to perform on the day. If we perform the way that I know my players are capable of performing, I have no doubt that we can challenge Somerset, give them a good run for their money, and possibly win the trophy if we can limit our mistakes over the two days.”

Smith was part of the selection meeting that went on for hours as the eastern end of the island tried to come up with a side capable of bringing home the trophy for the first time since 2012.

“We tried to come up with a solid team that we feel is good enough to wrestle Cup Match from Somerset.,’’ Smith said.

“We started just after 9pm and we ended at 2.30am, so it’s probably the longest one I've ever been involved in, but it’s all good. All of us are in support of the team and we wish all the players the best of luck and we hope they can perform to the best of their ability.

“As the head coach, I will sit down and put together the game plan and I will go it with the captains and share it with the players. we will go through it in detail to give ourselves the best chance possible of winning this game.

“We have two new colts coming in and both of them are very deserving of their spot, and we have high expectations of them. They have been playing well all season and we just ask them to come in and give us their best over the two days.”

As someone who has won the trophy as captain, Smith is well aware of the pressure growing with each year St George’s fail to beat their rivals.

“It’s been very difficult for us because growing up we've been so used to having the cup but now the roles are reversed,’’ he said.

“A lot of our fans are getting restless, players are getting restless, the president and everybody at the club is getting restless. We are at home now, so what better chance to give ourselves the opportunity to win.

“We had an opportunity to prepare a wicket that is going to be suitable to our players. We actually trained on that Cup Match wicket on Wednesday, so now it’s all about preparation, to make sure that we can execute the game plan and pull it off.”
