Lorenzo Tucker backs change of heart on cricket format

Warwick are coached by Lorenzo Tucker

Warwick Workmen’s Club head coach Lorenzo Tucker has applauded the Bermuda Cricket Board for reversing its controversial decision to reduce the 50 overs leagues to only one round of matches this season.

The BCB came under fire from clubs who strongly opposed the decision and the competition was restored to two rounds after a meeting last week.

Tucker believes that the restoration of the competition to its original format is one that serves the best interest of the local game.

“At the end of the day we are trying to develop in the longer form of the game as that's obviously a weakness of the country judging by the previous results,” Tucker told The Royal Gazette.

“We were a World Cup team back in 2007 and now we are not even in the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League after being relegated from that, so we need to play more of the longer form of the game.

“I think it’s the correct call and applaud the board for turning around and making it. It's very difficult to develop players when primarily your focus is T20. Last year we saw how detrimental it was with just one round and with rain teams struggled to get any type of consistency going, so I am glad that we have two rounds of 50 overs.

“How they determine the schedule will remain to be seen, but I think it's a good call for cricket in general.”

The 50 overs league enters its third week on Saturday with unbeaten Warwick and the Bermuda Under-19 squad facing off in a First Division encounter at Southampton Oval.
