Caribbean could have cricket team at 2028 LA Olympics
The Los Angeles Olympic Committee announced last year that cricket will be returning to the Games in 2028 but it has now been revealed that the Caribbean could be represented on the biggest stage.
At an executive board meeting held over the next two days in Lausanne, Switzerland, the International Olympic Committee is expected to ratify the proposed qualification system put forward by the International Cricket Council for the 2028 Games.
That framework is expected to reveal a competition comprising separate men’s and women’s competitions of six teams each.
The men’s pathway is primarily driven by ICC T20I rankings and provisions have also been included for host country quota places, subject to the satisfaction of relevant criteria. The final qualification place in both the men’s and women’s events is proposed to be determined via an Olympic Qualification Event.
The Olympic Global Qualifiers are proposed to feature eight teams but in accordance with IOC rules, West Indies cannot qualify for the Olympic Games as a combined team or book a direct quota spot.
However, a Caribbean pathway has been established, enabling a regional representative team to participate in the Olympic qualification event, with any Olympic qualification places ultimately allocated to eligible individual nations via their respective national Olympic committees.
The proposed women’s qualification pathway is largely based on performance at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, which may award up to four Olympic qualification places.
