Southampton Rangers score 411 in thrashing of St David’s

Southampton Rangers’ dominance this season looks likely to continue if their first match in the 50 Overs Premier Division is anything to go by.

Rangers scored 411 against St David’s at Southampton Oval yesterday and restricted their ten-man opponents to just 118 as they ran out winners by 295 runs.

Captain Alex Dore, who scored 82, continues to have high expectations and felt his side reacted superbly to losing a couple of early wickets.

“I am pleased with our innings, even though we lost our opening batsmen cheaply,” he said.

“Myself and Dalin Richardson did a great job and that led the foundation for others. We applied the right things but we want to be more ruthless in the field.”

Rangers won the toss and elected to bat on a scorching hot day and the away side made a strong start with the ball. St David’s captain Derrick Brangman trapped Rangers wicketkeeper Nacori Smith leg before with the second ball of the match.

St David’s wicketkeeper Ricardo Brangman and fielder Brian Hall completely missed a wider delivery in the second over from Isaiah O’Brien, which raced to the boundary for four byes and that was symptomatic of a poor fielding display.

Derrick Brangman continued his solid start with a maiden second over and Isaiah O’Brien applied added pressure in his third over, bowling Dante Wellman with a yorker on the fifth ball.

Young Isaac Todd struggled with his direction and Dalin Richardson cracked four consecutive boundaries in his lone over, which went for 19 runs.

Rangers concluded the batting powerplay at 60 for two but thereafter the home side ramped up the gears, with Richardson and Dore stepping their game up multiple notches. They reached the fifty partnership for the third wicket off 42 balls.

Chare Smith came into the bowling attack and started with a maiden over, but Richardson and his captain Dore got to the 150 partnership before Brian Hall finally dismissed Richardson with a yorker. New bat Dion Stovell then played right to Isaiah O’Brien off the next ball.

Allan Douglas Jr and Deunte Darrell made a 50-run stand for the seventh wicket off just 25 balls, but the former was bowled for Isaiah’s second wicket. Rangers reached the 400 milestone at 48.5 overs, closing the innings on 411 for eight, with Darrell top scoring with 87.

St David’s, who started a player short from first ball, had to chase this mammoth total without veteran Oliver Pitcher Jr, who suffered a leg injury when attempting to make a catch earlier.

Opener Dean Simons was almost run out when Nacori Smith failed to dislodge the bails from a strong throw by Dion Stovell, but Smith made amends soon after, taking a smooth catch from an inside edge by Simons.

Derrick Brangman tried to accelerate a stuttering innings, but had zero support as Simons was the only other to register double figures. The visitors closed with 118 for eight.
