Captain Smith, Fubler and Paynter star in final trial
Captain Sinclair Smith, Kevon Fubler and Nzari Paynter were among the standout performers during St George’s’ final Cup Match trial match at Wellington Oval on Saturday.
The President’s XI defeated the Vice-President XI by 77 runs, with Smith leasing all scorers with 60 from 63 balls. He dominated a fifth-wicket partnership with Dennico Hollis as the President’s XI posted 212 for nine declared after electing to take first strike.
“It was just about applying myself and taking advantage when the loose balls came,” said Smith, who dispatched Nyhrobi Carmichael for back-to-back sixes over the mid-wicket boundary to bring up his fifty in style.
“It was a good batting wicket and the groundsmen did a top job. First 20 deliveries I took my time but once I got the pace of the wicket and change of the bowler things flowed easy for me.
“I’ve worked hard on my batting and it has showed with a few knocks this year. I’ve had a few 40s and what not, but I think this is my first half century of the season.”
Isaiah O’Brien (30), Jonte Smith (29), Delray Rawlins (25), Keegan Jones (25) and Nzari Paynter (23) were the remaining President XI batters in double figures.
Left-arm spinner Fubler was the pick of the Vice-President XI bowling with six wickets for 38 runs, including the prized wicket of captain Smith.
“Today was an excellent performance with the ball,” said Fubler, who also sent down four maidens. “The wicket played in my favour and I got a lot of turn out there.”
Off spinner Paynter also wreaked havoc with the ball, claiming four for 14 as the Vice-President XI replied with 135 all out in 39.5 overs.
Vice-President XI captain Simmons (26), wicketkeeper Jahnoi Bean (21), Onias Bascome (19), Charles Trott (16), Fubler (12 not out) and Sheldon Caesar (10) were the only batters in double figures.
