Somerset in charge after first day of Cup Match

After abnormal scenes off the pitch on the first day of Cup Match, things took on a very familiar look in the middle when play started.

With customers locked out of the grounds for a number of hours in the morning and those inside asked to vacate their positions as a result of scaffolding issues, huge queues formed in the heat.

Patrons were eventually allowed entry early in the afternoon but when play began at 2.15pm there were still hundreds of people waiting to enter the grounds and those outside missed the early departure of Somerset captain Terryn Fray.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Fray lasted just two balls before he was caught behind by Sinclair Smith off the bowling of Zeko Burgess.

That may have buoyed St George’s hopes of turning the Cup Match tide but half centuries from Dominic Sabir (67) and Dion Stovell (52 not out) allied to scores of 47 from Kamau Leverock and 43 from Tre Manders left the champions favourite to hold on to the trophy.

Somerset finished the day on 277 for six.
