As expected Southampton Rangers completed an unbeaten Premier Division league campaign on Sunday.

And similar to last weekend, when they earned the league title without taking the field, they were handed victory, this time via forfeiture.

Scheduled opponents Somerset reportedly submitted prior notice to the Bermuda Cricket Board that they would be unable to field a team for the match at Somerset Cricket Club, thus surrendering the points.

It was the second weekend in a row that the west enders had given away points to opponents without contesting the match.

Last Sunday it was understood that the captains of Somerset and St George’s “agreed” to a share of the points from their scheduled match at Wellington Oval despite the club’s groundsman having turned over what he described in a text message as a pitch suitable for play.

“I turned the wicket over to the umpire at 11am and the game was due to start at 12,” began the text. “Both captains walked to the wicket at 11.45am to tell the umpire they will share the points.

“I was p**** off because I was at the field at 5.30am doing what I had to do to make sure the game was played.”

Concerns exist regarding such “practices” being employed by clubs as the moves can have direct effects on relegation as well as positioning relevant to end-of-season knockout competitions.
