Men charged with robbery at bus terminal

Two men charged with using force to rob a third man were remanded into custody last week.

Andre Tucker, 30, and Treadwell Smith, 25, both pleaded not guilty to the offence.

They allegedly stole items worth $125 from Jermaine Johnson on February 6. The items stolen included Capital G and MarketPlace cards, a bus pass and $40.

Crown counsel Takiyah Burgess said a group of men approached Mr Johnson at the Hamilton Bus Terminal around 9pm and asked for tobacco .

When he refused, the men violently lifted Mr Johnson up and pulled items from his pockets.

Mr Tucker punched the complainant in the mouth, Ms Burgess said. The defendants were later arrested at Casey’s bar on Queen Street.

Both defendants said they were in the area when the incident took place but denied the allegations. Mr Tucker said he only got involved to help Mr Johnson, whom he described as disabled.

Mr Smith told Magistrates’ Court he only watched the incident unfold, saying repeatedly: “I didn’t touch him.”

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner remanded both men into custody until February 23, when the matter is scheduled to return to court for mention.
