Teenager kicked from bike in attempted robbery

A teenager was kicked off his cycle by two men in a violent effort to rob him.The pair targeted Tyler Kerr as he drove home alone, grabbing him by his neck and helmet strap in order to lift him off his bike. When that didn’t work, they gave him a kick that sent the 16-year-old and his bike to the ground.Tyler suffered minor injuries a passing car sent the thugs running and its driver called police.“If she hadn’t been there, and they came back, I think I would still be in hospital,” he told The Royal Gazette. The teenager was attacked as he rode home after a party around 10.30pm last Thursday. He had just left his friends, and was on Middle Road in Devonshire when the would-be thieves approached him.“I saw the bike beside me and I thought it was another one of my friends because they had the same kind of bike, but when I looked they both had dark visors pulled down,” he said.“The driver reached over and tried to grab my keys but I punched his hand away. Then the guy on the back of the bike grabbed me by the neck and the helmet strap and lifted me off my bike.”Tyler said he gripped his bike with his legs and pushed away from his attackers. He was near the junction with Brighton Hill when he was kicked to the ground just as a woman drove past in her car.He shouted for her to call the police.“I jumped up and ran to her car. They must have heard me because they turned around and left,” he said. “The entire incident took just a few seconds.”He was later taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he was treated for injuries to his arm and wrist.Mr Kerr said that he doesn’t usually ride alone at night because of his concern that such an incident might happen.“You just can’t let your guard down, even for a second,” he warned.Police yesterday reported that officers responded to an attempted robbery in Devonshire around 11pm.“It appears that a 16-year-old male auxiliary cycle rider was accosted by two unknown males on a motorcycle as he travelled along Middle Road near the junction with Brighton Hill Road,” a spokeswoman said.“As a result, the Devonshire teenager and the auxiliary cycle fell to the ground; however he sustained relatively minor injuries that did not require hospital treatment. Motorists travelling in the area at the time stopped to help the teen.”Police are now looking for two males dressed in dark-coloured clothing and wearing dark-coloured helmets with tinted visors.Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Detective Constable Tiffany Caisey on 295-0011.
