Police are investigating a broad daylight attack on a teenager in a quiet neighbourhood. Two men with helmets and visors pulled up on a motorcycle and attacked Dominic Daniels, 19, yesterday afternoon as he was working near Devonshire Bay for a local landscaping firm. The victim, who was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital following the incident, reportedly suffered extensive cuts to his legs and was coughing up blood when his mother arrived.Mr Daniels, from Paget, was saved from further harm by the actions of one of his work colleagues who fought back, striking one of the attackers with a garden strimmer and then chasing after them as they fled to try and get a look at the motorcycle's number plate, despite reportedly being threatened with a gun.The stricken teen was comforted by Devon Point Lane residents following the attack and one woman who lives near the scene said she was helping Mr Daniels when his mother arrived.“She took one look at him and broke down,” she said. “Afterwards, I was talking to an officer and he said that nowhere is safe now. That's what frightens me.”Police have yet to reveal a possible motive for the attack, although local residents told The Royal Gazette that in the immediate aftermath officers had said they thought it might be gang related.Describing the day's events, the woman who comforted Mr Daniels said she was in her home when her mother told her there was someone on the lawn. They then heard shouting coming from outside.“I came out to find out what all the shouting was about and one of the landscapers started waving at me to come down there,” she said. She said when she stepped out the attackers had already fled and the victim was laying on the ground with blood soaking through his pants.“The way he was sitting I thought he was cut off at the knee,” she said. “When I came down there it was a bloodbath.”She spent the next few minutes talking to the victim, trying to keep him awake and in the recovery position.“I was asking him his name, where he lived, what he was did over the weekend,” she said. “He said he went out for drinks, so I asked him where, if he had dark and stormys. He laughed and blood came out of his mouth.”Police blocked off traffic on Devon Point Lane yesterday afternoon as officers collected evidence and spoke with neighbours about the incident.“Details are unclear at this time, but it appears that a 19-year-old male was injured and is currently at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital receiving treatment,” a police spokeswoman said yesterday. “The suspects are described as two males on a dark-coloured motorcycle, wearing dark clothing.”Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with any information to contact the main police number on 295-0011.Told of the incident last night, area MP Bob Richards said: “The thought comes to my mind is that I'm very disturbed this has happened. It is evidence that it doesn't matter where you live, this gang tit-for-tat activity can be brought to anyone's doorstep. Devon Point is not the type of neighbourhood you would expect to have a gang fight. But Bermuda being so small it shows it can happen anywhere and getting to the root of this problem and extingusihning it is now even more urgent.”

I wasn't going to watch him get killed

A landscaper whose colleague was hacked in the legs by two assailants managed to strike back before the threat of a gun forced him to retreat.

The man's boss told

The Royal Gazette: “He had a strimmer, and he hit one of the guys in the face with it to get him off the other guy.“I told him it was a brave thing to do and he said to me, 'You think a colleague of mine is going to get killed in front of me and I'm not going to do anything?'”After hitting the attackers, however: “That's the point the guy said that he had a gun, and he backed off.”He added: “When they left, he went after them to get the number off the back of the bike, but apparently they had covered it.”The victim, who had worked for the company for about a year, was last night able to speak to his co-workers by phone.Shocked from the attack, fellow gardeners said they had no idea why their colleague would have been set upon as he went about his work.
