Thieves smash station window to steal cash

Robinson?s Marina: The boarded up window, which was smashed by thieves.

Robinson’s Marina in Sandys was hit by an early morning break-in yesterday by thieves who stripped the cash register and safe.Station Manager Malcolm Swan said police responded to the silent alarm. “They were met by the owner of the property Joseph Robinson at 5.15am to find the shattered glass panel and the sledgehammer used to break it still there.”And while the three men responsible were caught on camera, the videotape reveals very little information, if any on their identity.“We have cameras inside the station and we have the culprits on videotape, but you can’t make out who they are,” said Mr Swan.“All three men were dressed in all black clothing, with gloves on wearing crash helmets with dark full face visors. They were in and out of the place within two minutes.“The silent alarm was triggered when they broke the glass with a sledgehammer, which they left here.”Mr Swan said: “They broke the whole panel of glass next to the door and just walked right in. They went straight to the cash register and the safe below, I haven’t checked to see how much money they actually made off with yet.”A police spokesman confirmed that the scene has been “forensically examined” as this latest investigation continues. The station manager noted that it has been a while since the last break in at Sandys parish business. “We had four break-ins two years ago, and this place is all glass. We put up wire mesh inside the glass door after the other break ins.”When asked if the owners will rethink the glass front design of the building, he chuckled and said: “That would be very expensive, we weren’t having break-ins like this back when this design plan was made, but the decision would not be up to me, that would be a matter for the owners.”After 16 years on the job, the station manager believes this latest break in is a “sign of the times”. “It could be drug related, it could be linked to unemployment because people are desperate for cash.“I just think the people responsible are just falling in line, but this is the first time I’ve seen them go straight for the cash register; they normally go for the cartons of cigarettes. This time they came strictly for the cash.”As for the broken glass panel, he said: “We’ve made temporary repairs and put up a sheet of plywood until we can get the glass replaced.”Police confirmed that officers responded to the reported burglary, and that “three unknown suspects gained entry into the service station, removed a quantity of cash and made good their escape”.The statement also confirms that all three offenders were wearing helmets at the time. Detectives are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with any information regarding this matter to contact the Somerset Criminal Investigation Unit on 234-1010.
