‘Moderate’ response to bag snatch video

Bag snatch: In this video still the pillion passenger on the light-coloured bike is holding the handbag that was grabbed from a tourist’s rental cycle seconds earlier. The theft took place on South Road, near Astwood Park, on Wednesday.

A “moderate” number of people have come forward to help police find two brazen thieves who snatched a bag from the basket of a tourist’s rental cycle.

The visitor was driving along South Road, near Astwood Park in Warwick, on Wednesday afternoon when the robbers sped past and grabbed the bag.

The theft was captured on camera by a tourist travelling in front of the victim, who was filming using a GoPro camera at the time.

The footage was circulated by the media with an appeal for the public’s help in identifying the robbers.

Bermuda Police Service said yesterday it had “received a moderate level of responses as it relates the handbag snatch and we are following up all leads”.

“The video has served as an important investigative tool as it gives the public a visual image and we now have faces and a bike we can focus on,” a police spokesman said.

“We believe someone in the community has knowledge of who the suspects are and we are encouraging anyone with any information to contact police on 295-0011.”

Police Commissioner Michael DeSilva emphasised on Thursday that “crime is a community problem that requires community solutions”, as he praised the public for helping the service to reduce criminal activity.
