Island-wide club cameras idea ‘impractical’

Installing security cameras in clubs island-wide is “impractical” and beyond the Bermuda Government's remit, Senator Jeffrey Baron has said.

However, the Minister of National Security added that plans are already under way to extend CCTV coverage in areas of key activity.

Mr Baron spoke to The Royal Gazette after Wednesday night's shooting at Hamilton Parish Workman's Club. A gunman arrived on the premises at about 9.50pm and shot a 28-year-old man several times.

According to an eyewitness account, the victim's life was saved by crawling under a pool table, which blocked a bullet. He remains in a stable condition at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

It is understood that CCTV cameras are installed at the club but were broken at the time of the incident.

The day after the attack, Hamilton Parish East MP Derrick Burgess called on the Bermuda Government to invest in security cameras at clubs throughout the island.

“That would help us to police these areas,” he said.

“When people know there are cameras around, they act differently.”

Yesterday, Mr Baron wished the victim and his family well.

“I condemn this chilling and wanton disregard for life,” he said.

“Bermuda has a history of strong working men's and community clubs and I would urge club executives to make security at their premises a priority.”

Responding to Mr Burgess' suggestion, Mr Baron said: “Our remit does not extend to private members clubs and it would impractical to do otherwise.

“The Bermuda Police Service has and will continue to work with clubs and community organisations on best practices when it comes to safety and security.

The Government's principal responsibility is a CCTV network for the island and we have provided that.

“We also recently announced plans to extend CCTV coverage to key areas of activity in St George's and Dockyard.”
