Police hunt suspect over handbag theft

A 15-year-old arrested in connection with the theft of a visitor’s handbag has been released on police bail.

But a police spokesman said efforts to find a second suspect are ongoing over the incident last Friday at 12.15pm.

The spokesman said: “It now appears that the female visitor, said to be a 52-year-old Canadian woman, was riding a rental scooter into the parking lot at Horseshoe Bay Beach when two young black males on a motorcycle approached from behind, with the pillion passenger removing her handbag from the rental scooter’s basket.

“Apparently the woman alerted her family members, who attempted to stop the two suspects on the motorcycle from leaving, but the young men were able to escape with the handbag.”

The spokesman said later that afternoon police chased the suspects through the City of Hamilton until the suspects crashed into a private car near the Transport Control Department on North Street.

The stolen handbag was recovered, and the motorcycle used by the suspects was impounded for forensic tests.

Anyone with information about the incident are asked to contact police at 247-1744 or the Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-8477.
