Man charged in connection with incident when pitbull terrier died

A man arrested following a brawl on Front Street in which a pitbull terrier died has appeared in court.

In Magistrates’ Court yesterday Kyle Smith, 36, pleaded not guilty to three charges of injuring a police officer, one count of threatening behaviour, and one count of carrying a prohibited weapon, namely a knife.

The alleged incident happened outside a restaurant last Wednesday afternoon. Mr Smith’s pitbull, named ‘Trouble’, died while Mr Smith was being arrested.

One police officer was taken to hospital following the incident.

Mr Smith was remanded into custody and will next appear in court on Friday, August 12.
