Burglar gets away with ‘significant’ amount of cash in BMDS raid

The Bermuda Police Service has appealed for anyone with information on the theft of a “significant amount” of cash from an amateur dramatic society to come forward.

A police spokesman said the theft from the Bermuda Musical and Dramatical Society’s Daylesford Theatre on Dundonald Street took place between 3am and 5am yesterday.

He said an unknown male entered the premises and removed a safe containing a quantity of cash.

Anyone with information on this matter is asked to contact Sergeant Joanne Raposo on 717- 2421 or via e-mail at jraposo@bps.bm

BMDS said the thieves were able to remove a safe from the premises, which contained bar takings, along with tips earmarked for the society’s charitable trust. The trust provides scholarships for performing arts students.

Kim Day, the president of BMDS, said she was “saddened” by the raid.

She said: “Unfortunately, the culprit was able to abscond with the safe, which had a significant amount of money inside, as well as the bar tip jars.

“The funds were bar takings from the evenings where Famous for 15 Minutes was taking place. Monies from the tip jars were also taken.

“We are fortunate that ticket sales are handled through ptix.bm and that only the bar takings were affected.

“We are all volunteers at BMDS, and bartenders are not allowed to accept tips but happily put all tips in the jars. Those proceeds are for the BMDS Charitable Trust.

“We are of course working with the authorities and wished to advise the membership prior to it being released through social media.”

Ms Day said the club will be open tonight and that the curtain will go up on performances of Famous for 15 Minutes slated to take place tomorrow through Saturday.

She said: “ Please note, this will not impact Famous for 15 Minutes as we will resume normal operations tomorrow.

“This has not deterred us, and we will be open for business as usual TOnight for our members, and Famous will be back on Wednesday evening.”
