Police have been on patrol in increased numbers over the Easter holiday weekend in an effort to deter crime.

Detective Chief Inspector Jason Smith, the operational commander over the three days, said that there were traditionally a large number of social events at this time of year.

Mr Smith said: “During this holiday weekend, the public will notice a heightened police presence as patrols attend various community events throughout the island with a view to deterring antisocial behaviour.

“Proactive policing initiatives can be expected throughout the weekend as we focus our attention on deterring those persons who are intent on disrupting the holiday festivities with acts of violence and criminality.

“We anticipate that in keeping with Bermuda’s Easter traditions there will be the usual increase in kite flying. We urge you to be considerate of your neighbours when flying your kites.

“Please take note of the safety advice issued by Belco as well as the advisories published by the airport authorities about kites being flown near the airport or on the airport approaches.

“The BPS usually experiences a high increase of noise and loud music complaints during this period.

“We ask that you, the members of our community, work together with your neighbours to prevent any disputes and resolve any issues with minimal police intervention.

“Roadside sobriety checkpoints will be in place in all parishes commencing at midnight on Friday and ending on Sunday.

“We remind you not to operate any vehicle if you plan on consuming alcohol.

“In addition, there will be continued traffic enforcement, and speeding and other traffic offences will be targeted.

“We urge you that while we implement these measures that are necessary to prevent any untoward behaviour or disruptions during the Easter holiday, we ask that you do your part and comply with the lawful instruction or guidance from our officers, whether it be during a traffic stop or even if you’ve been asked to turn down the music.

“Let us work together to make it a safe and enjoyable Easter for everyone.”
