A man who crashed a motorcycle in Paget on Monday night was arrested for impaired driving.

A police spokesman said that at about 11.25pm, police attended the scene of a single-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle near the junction of Stovell Lane and South Road.

The spokesman said: “Officers were informed the bike was travelling in an easterly direction on South Road when the rider appeared to have lost control of the vehicle and fell onto the roadway.

“A member of the public contacted police while they remained with the bike rider, who had suffered what were determined to be minor injuries. Upon arrival, officers observed the bike rider displayed signs of intoxication.”

The spokesman said the rider was arrested and a test later found he had 179.5 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, more than double the legal limit of 80 milligrams.

Checks also confirmed that the rider did not have a valid driver’s licence.

He is expected to appear in Magistrates’ Court in the coming days.

The spokesman added: “The Bermuda Police Service encourage a community mindset shift to a culture where impaired driving is socially unacceptable.

“If a friend, family member or colleague is insisting on driving or riding under the influence, attempt to convince them not to take the chance. If that doesn't work, call 211 and report them.

“Saving lives and preventing serious injuries to friends, family members, work colleagues, visitors as well as the motoring public in general through such proactive interventions helps make Bermuda’s roads safer for all.”
