Suspected impaired driving and alleged possession of knives continued to give “cause for concern” over the long holiday weekend, the Bermuda Police Service said.

The comments came as the BPS reported more than 40 arrests made between 5pm Wednesday and 5am today, although no major criminal incidents were reported.

Members of the public were thanked for their co-operation over the Cup Match holiday period as an operational policing plan was also said to have “contributed to a largely safe and peaceful long weekend”.

The BPS said: “Despite the positive overall outcome, several incidents remain a cause for concern.

“Police arrested seven motorists on suspicion of driving or having care and control of a vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

“Additionally, five individuals were taken into custody after allegedly being found in possession bladed articles, namely knives.”

Figures released by police showed that 13 people were arrested over the 4½ days for outstanding warrants.

Of those suspected of driving under the influence, one was alleged to have had 284 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, when the legal limit is 80mg/100ml.

Acting Commissioner of Police Na’imah Astwood said: “Roadside sobriety stops combined with traffic checks and stop-and-search operations will remain in place as the Bermuda Police Service continues efforts to reduce this life-threatening behaviour.

“However, as we’ve repeatedly stated, we cannot do it alone and call upon you the community to do your part by helping to foster a cultural change that makes impaired driving socially unacceptable.”

She highlighted how carrying weapons “often increases the risk of serious injury or violence” and urged people to avoid confrontation and contact police if they feel threatened.

Ms Astwood said: “Choosing not to carry a weapon protects both you and those around you.”

She added that people were also arrested for making threats while brandishing knives during two isolated incidents at Somerset Cricket Club.

Ms Astwood said that the disturbances were controlled thanks to “the co-ordinated efforts of police officers, event security personnel and members of the Royal Bermuda Regiment”.

The weapons were seized and anyone with information on either of the incidents was asked to call 211 or 295-0011.

Ms Astwood added: “Cup Match is one of Bermuda’s most celebrated traditions and ensuring that it can be enjoyed safely requires a partnership between police, our emergency service colleagues, event organisers, volunteers and the public.

“I sincerely thank everyone who played their part, particularly our officers, reserve police and Royal Bermuda Regiment personnel, whose professionalism and commitment throughout the weekend were instrumental in delivering a safe and enjoyable event for our community.”
