De Ste Croix, Bordage lift time trial titles

Veteran cyclists Neil de Ste Croix and Karen Bordage won their respective divisions to take the Bank of Bermuda Foundation Time Trial Championship titles, posting impressive times over their rivals. The event in Southside at the weekend saw adult male competitors racing over a 19.6 mile course, while the distance was cut to 16.4 miles for adult women, in what is often termed as “the race of truth”.In time trials the riders start at one-minute intervals and no drafting is permitted, revealing an honest assessment of the individual’s capabilitiesDe Ste Croix, of Fast Forward Freight Bicycle Works, gained his second championship title of the year, adding to the mountain biking crown he earned in March and showed a return to the form demonstrated earlier this year in off-road events. His performance was perfectly timed ahead of this month’s Island Games in which De Ste Croix will compete in the mountain biking event.De Ste Croix’s winning effort was eight seconds ahead of Darren Glasford and 21 seconds better than veteran Kent Richardson. The trio posted the top overall times for adult men and the male Masters group, while defending national champion Shannon Lawrence won the male open category.Bordage, of Winner’s Edge, was a convincing winner of the female title, a whopping six and a half minutes ahead of the next best woman’s time, and she also took home the female Masters title.Stacy Babb, of Team Crime Stoppers, topped the female Open age group and grabbed the national championship title. The junior titles were won by Dominique Mayho and Gabriella Arnold, ahead of strong performances by several juniors who are hoping for selection to represent Bermuda at the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships in Puerto Rico this August.
